Tooling Engineer

Large and growing automotive components manufacturing company is seeking a Tooling Engineer for its plant in central Missouri!  The Tooling Engineer coordinates and performs all tooling engineering activities, manages tooling budget, purchasing and inventory. Interacts with manufacturing, engineering, quality, facilities, and tool and die work areas to perform all job responsibilities and to initiate continuous improvement and lean activities. 
 
Job Responsibilities
 
  1. Coordinates and performs all activities in build, design and modification of new and existing die cast tooling and trim dies.
  2. Manages die drawings and 3-D data in conjunction with Central Engineering and suppliers.
  3. Works with die shops, tool room and internal groups to manage tooling from the initial design through tool build, die cast trials and PPAP activities for new and existing programs.
  4. Manages the approval of the tooling budget, new tooling purchase orders and the purchase order generation process. Works closely with Purchasing on maintaining the qualified capacity for company’s current and future tooling needs.
  5. Performs purchasing and tooling inventory management functions. Ensures inventories of all die components are adequate.
  6. Manages the tracking of tool life (CCR) performance, and all customer reporting on tool usage/life activities.
  7. Oversees tool shop’s quality and timing to support trials.
  8. Oversees the change management process for tooling, including the link of ECR’s to die drawings and models and die and tool shops. Facilitates methods for quick die change.
  9. Develops best practices for die maintenance. Supports continuous improvement activities as it relates to tooling and tooling maintenance.
  10. Creates and maintains cash flows for amortized parts and budget for amortized tooling.
  11. Analyzes tools at the end of their life and premature failure of tools for counter measures with the purpose of extending total throughput of the tool.
  12. Creates and maintains a service parts plan that ensures tools are available to produce service parts for the contracted life.
  13. Maintains and improves tooling standards that will lower cost of product.
 
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years tooling design, application and management experience.
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing experience, formal training preferred.
  • Proficient skills in Solid Works for 3-D and 2-D design work.
  • Proficient blue print/part print reading skills.
  • Proficient skills in process control programs.
  • Proficient knowledge of tool building and machining tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts, preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of the die cast process and process control procedures, preferred.
  • Ability to make presentations, conduct productive meetings and lead group discussions.
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues and determine priorities without direct supervision.
  • Ability to lead group meetings and problem solving sessions.
  • Ability to implement change and manage improvement projects.
